THE SIXTEENTH SUNDAY OF YEAR C:
17/18th July 2010
Fr Frank writes:
Last Sunday I began a series of three homilies based around the life of John Henry Newman who is due to be beatified by
the Pope in September. That homily covered the period 1801 to 1833 and was illustrated by his poem (later turned into a
hymn), 'Lead Kindly Light'. In this poem/hymn we gain a significant insight into Newman's profound
spirituality.
Today's homily ('Praise to the Holiest') looks at the seeds of Catholicism planted in Newman during his
'Grand Tour of 1832/3' and, in particular, the meeting, in 1833, with Nicholas (later Cardinal) Wiseman then Rector
of the English College in Rome when the question of reconciliation between the Anglican Communion and the Catholic Church
was discussed. We will see how those seeds grew, culminating in Newman's reception into the Church in 1845.
May God richly bless you.
Father Frank

Any queries to our Papal Visit Coordinator, Cath Lyons on 460783.
- Reverence at Mass: There seems to be some confusion as to my invitation to make a reverence before
receiving the host. The instructions in the Missal do not say that we should genuflect, but that we should make a sign of
reverence - this could be a bow of the head for those unable to genuflect. Also, for now, this is only an invitation -
but an important one as it is part of our staged preparation for the new missal. Any problems/concerns do let me
know.
- Ghanaian Catholic Chaplaincy: All Ghanaians are requested to call their Sector Representatives (Mr
Michael Adjei-Asante on 02082782451 or Mr Kwabena Kodua on 02085036981 to discuss member ship of the Ghanaian Catholic
Chaplaincy.

Frank.
